Classroom Guidance

Southside's core school counseling curriculum consists of structured lessons designed to help students attain the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills appropriate for their developmental level. The school counseling core curriculum is delivered throughout the schoolnand is systematically presented by school counselors in collaboration with classroom teachers.

Second Step 

Classroom teachers use the Second Step lessons to instill social-emotional skills in their students. These developing social-emotional skills include making friends, managing emotions, and solving problems.  This sets students on the path for social success and academic readiness.

Guidance Lessons

Students will be exposed to the following concepts during classroom guidance lessons:
  • Kelso's Choices (Conflict Resolution Strategies)
  • Career Opportunities
  • Drug Prevention (Red Ribbon Week)
  • Bully Prevention 
  • Respect for Self/Others
  • Managing/Maintaining Friendship
  • Kindness/Compassion (Random Acts of Kindness/Bucket Filling)
  • Empathy
  • Responsibility
  • Study Skills
